DETERMINANTS OF SOFTWARE ADOPTION AND USE FOR AUTOMATION IN ACADEMIC LIBRARY IN ANAMBRA AND EBONYI STATE
ABSTRACT: This study was carried out to examine the determinants of software adoption and use for automation in academic library in Anambra And Ebonyi State using Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Ebonyi state University as a case study. The study aimed at assessing the software program available to academic libraries; assessing the need for the adoption of software in an academic libraries; ascertaining the use of library automation in academic libraries; and the factors that influence the choice of library software packages in academic libraries. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of civil servants in Ughelli South Local Government Area. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 63 respondents and all were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. The hypothesis were tested using chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that; the software programs available to academic libraries include; DSpace, ALICE, E-Lib, CDS/ISIS, SLAM, X – LIB, and KOHA. The findings further show that there are various need for the adoption of software programs in an academic library, among them include; easy access to information, elimination of repetition, accuracy and timeliness, speedy information retrieval, and increase efficiency. Therefore it is recommended that management of the different universities should embrace the concept of automation of university libraries and give moral, financial and political support to the implementation of this innovation. To mention but a few.
